Where should I get coffee in Phoenix, AZ?

Phoenix

Provision Coffee

Espresso + Tonic (with a lemon twist!), Casablanca

Well, I’ll be darned. This was my first experience with espresso and tonic - where has this been all my life?! If you are into the bitter deliciousness of tonic, then you’ll love this delightful beverage, especially with Provision’s perfectly pulled espresso. The bright, lemony finish makes this an ideal afternoon sip, if you ask me. It’s clear to me, by their creative menu, that they also serve excellent cocktails here - although I haven’t yet tried those. #Covid19

My mom had the Winnie Palmer (sparkling white tea, spiced honey, fresh squeezed lemon, fresh mint, and aromatic & grapefruit bitters) which was also excellent. I can’t wait to try their other specialty drinks, especially the Casablanca, if I can ever bring myself to try something other than Espresso + Tonic.

Update - On my 3rd (4th?) visit, I finally tried the Casablanca. Wow. It is utterly fantastic. Nitro cold brew, spiced honey, figgy pudding & black walnut bitters, dusted with Ceylon cinnamon and cardamom. A must-try!

Almond Milk Cappuccino

Coffee and Art! My favorite combo. This was a solid almond milk cappuccino. They have a 2nd location in Arcadia, but I visited the original Phoenix location. There is a beautiful mural on the wall, and I really enjoyed the aesthetic of the coffee shop. If I’m being honest, it wasn’t a standout cappuccino for me, but I enjoyed it, and would certainly come back to try it again - and their drip coffee, as they roast their beans in house!

The Fitzgerald, The cactus wren, seasonal coffee + soda

Seasonal Coffee and Soda

Seasonal Coffee and Soda

Hot.Dog. Now this is the kind of place that makes me want to come back again and again and again. Located inside the Rebel Lounge, they also serve creative cocktails - so you know that the coffee menu is going to be bomb. And it is.

We tried The Fitzgerald - tonic, simple syrup, orange bitters, espresso, and cinnamon. Unfortunately, it is only available for a short time, as their menu changes seasonally, but I would drink this every day if I could. It is perfection.

My brother tried another seasonal drink, The Cactus Wren - matcha, house made prickly pear and jalapeño syrup, and milk of your choice. Another winner. The creativity is amazing, and the drinks are even more so.

On my second visit, I tried the Seasonal Coffee + Soda (maple syrup, Topo Chico, carbonated cold brew (!!!!!!!), cherry bitters and maraschino garnish). Just….wow. So ridiculously good. The sweetness is subtle, well balanced with the espresso, and they even gave me the rest of my Topo Chico to take with me :)

They just opened in late October 2020, and one of the owners just so happens to be the brother of one of my dear friends - way to go, Luke!! Knocked it out of the park with Reap and Sow!

Cocoa Cold Brew & Cocoa Cold Brew with Honey!

Ok so, Cocoa Cold Brew needs to be a thing. It is just spectacular. Maybe it doesn’t have the same depth of flavor as straight cold brew, but the addition of cocoa is a game changer - especially when you add a touch of honey! Ridiculous. I’ll keep coming back for this again and again.

Side note: the addition of honey happened as a result of a menu mixup. Online, it says that they offer both Honey Cold Brew and Cocoa Cold Brew. The barista said that they have never had honey cold brew, and no one knows why the menu says that online, but he could certainly add some honey to the cocoa flavor - et voila. We tried it both ways, plain and with honey, and I have to say I prefer it with honey, even as a person who doesn’t love sweet coffee. It’s just delightful.

The baristas are SUPER friendly, and they have a lovely coffee house cat who snoozes outside - and this beautiful mural across the street!

Almond Milk Cappuccino

Ok first of all, their merch says DRINK COFFEE. CREATE STUFF. SLEEP. This is basically my life’s purpose, so I see you Xanadu - and I like what I see. The coffee here is excellent. They are primarily a roastery, with the coffee shop being a new venture, and I love it! They have some cool local art and the aforementioned excellent merch (I probably need a hoodie, right?)

My cappuccino was perfect, my brother loved his cold brew. They graciously offered to remake my sister in law’s Chai so that it was more to her preference. I will definitely be returning - a solid, straightforward coffee experience!

Cold Brew con Horchata, agave mesquite latte

Anytime there is Horchata involved, count me in. Yes, horchata is sweet - but it is SO worth it for great, house made horchata. And the Cold Brew con Horchata is worth it. Absolutely delicious! So refreshing, great balance of flavors. Yes, a bit on the sweet side but I bet they could adjust the ratio to whatever your preference is.

My brother tried the Agave Mesquite Latte with almond milk. The flavor of mesquite is so unique and so interesting, I was super excited to try this. It was also delightful. A truly unique coffee experience that I haven’t had anywhere else. I probably wouldn’t drive there just to have their drip coffee, but for something different? For sure.

Almond Milk Cappuccino

This coffee shop is adorable inside. I didn’t have the best service - the barista was clearly overwhelmed so I will try not to hold it against them, but it was a pretty rough 15 minute wait for a single almond milk cappuccino when there were only a few customers in the shop. That being said, the coffee is fantastic. They have a number of Mexican-inspired drinks, one of which has a Tres Leches cold foam situation that I really want to go back and experience.

The art inside is really cool, and they had some good looking pastries as well. I would definitely come back here - hopefully the service was a fluke!

Almond Milk Cappuccino

They describe themselves as a Traditional Espresso Bar and Roastery - and they are just that! Straightforward, traditional espresso bar with excellent coffee beans. We visited the location at the Biltmore, and they also have Heritage Square location (as well as one in Gilbert, which has fancier, blended beverages too).

This was a solid Almond Milk Cappuccino. Nothing particularly unique or mind blowing, but solid. If I were jonesing for a coffee and was close to a Royal location, I’d totally stop by and get a drink.

Kream

Almond Milk Cappuccino (2nd Visit - Cinnamon Toast Latte (!!))

Located inside For The People home store, Kream is an ultra-modern, straightforward coffee bar, with some artisan shrub sodas and a beautiful pastry options. On my first visit, I went with the standard Almond Milk Cappuccino here. The barista was super friendly, and the cappuccino was very well crafted. They are brewing an Ethiopian espresso roast by Hex Coffee, which was very flavorful and smooth.

My brother tried the Strawberry Basil Shrub soda, and the most beautiful Peach Pop Tart (it had real gold leaf on it! Nice touch.). The shrub wasn’t super sweet, which we both enjoyed. This is a solid coffee stop - I’d definitely come back if I were in the area, if for no other reason than to have an excuse to check out all of the cute stuff in the store when it’s not Covid times :)

Update - On my 2nd visit, I tried the Cinnamon Toast Latte. Hot dog, it is DELICIOUS. Crafted with oat milk exclusively, it is not too sweet, very cinnamon-y and delightful all around.

Cafe de Olla

The CUTEST little coffee shop! I found this one via Instagram - and I’m so glad I did. Next door to an adorable art studio/shop featuring local art, this Mexican coffee outpost is a must-visit. The baristas are super friendly, the drinks are delicious and the bright, airy space has simple but adorable decor.

We tried the Cafe De Olla, a traditional Mexican coffee beverage, with espresso, piloncillo (Mexican raw sugar), cinnamon, anise and clove - and made with oat milk. Oh man, it was DELICIOUS. A little on the sweet side for what I typically go for, but worth it to try their classic preparation. They also have a Latte de Miel, with Arizona Mesquite honey, that I definitely want to come back and try. It’s a quick stop off of the 51, and totally worth it! (While you’re at it, you can get some tacos from Tacos Chiwas which is pretty much across the street)

Fever Dream Coffee

Shh…its a SECRET!

Molé Coronado, Oat Milk Cappuccino

IMG_8593 (1).jpg

The fact that this is set up as a speakeasy-style, secret coffee pop up is so charming, I can’t even handle it. You set out on a little adventure to find this hidden gem, tucked away in an alley in Phoenix’ Coronado District - and it is SO worth the adventure.

Nick and Jasper are really knocking it out of the park with their great coffee, friendly atmosphere, beautiful pastries and conversation. We tried two drinks and a pastry - starting with the Molé Coronado, Jasper’s creation of a latte with Mulato, Pasilla and Arbol peppers, cacao, cinnamon, mole spices and orange bitters. It is DELICIOUS - complex, but nicely balanced and super smooth. And not sweet! I already want to come back just to have it again. It was that good. The Oat Milk Cappuccino was just as wonderful, and the espresso was perfectly pulled. YUM.

The pastries are next level. All homemade, all dairy free, and simply beautiful. My brother tried the Blueberry Crumble and said it was “just ridiculous”.

They just opened a few days ago, and will only be around for a limited time, so I suggest making the pilgrimage to Fever Dream ASAP. Start at The Main Ingredient Ale House and go from there…..@FeverDreamCoffee

Horchata Latte, Cajeta

Futuro.jpg

It’s no wonder that the line was out the door for Futuro’s coffee on Saturday morning - these drinks are INCREDIBLE. Their sleek, art-gallery/salon/coffee shop/restaurant vibe is aesthetically pleasing, and their Mexican coffee menu is even more so. Choosing a drink was hard work - but anytime there is Horchata on the menu, I must have it.

The Horchata Latte with oat milk was ridiculously good. Clearly made in house and clearly made with care, the horchata was perfect. As was the espresso. This is a 10/10 for me. The Cajeta was also incredible - choosing a favorite would be very difficult. The goat milk caramel + sea salt combo is stunning. Literally came back two days in a row to try each beverage. Sorry I’m Not Sorry.

I can’t wait to come back and try the Mazapan and Cafe de Olla!

Pear Ginger Matcha Latte + Peach Cardamom Cold Brew + Sage Caramel Cappuccino

Peach Cardamom Cold Brew

Peach Cardamom Cold Brew

Located in a really fun area of Chandler, Peixoto Coffee Roasters has excellent curbside service and cold brew on tap. Being a roastery, they source and roast their own beans so you know the coffee is going to be good. I would definitely try their cold brew just as is, but their seasonal menu was way too intriguing. I’ve been back three times to try these drinks, and purchased a pound of Peixoto Honey Coffee (delightful)!

I am seriously digging the fruit+spice combos they have going on here. I don’t typically love super sweet coffee, but holy cow. These are GREAT. The matcha is the perfect amount of sweet, and the ginger kick was what I was hoping for. The Peach Cardamom Cold Brew was RIDIC. It was a tad on the sweet side for my tastes, but with some mixing it balanced out as I kept drinking - I adore cardamom coffee, and this was such a fresh take on it, I’d drink it again and again. Can’t wait to see what their next batch of seasonal drinks looks like!

Update - On a subsequent visit, I tried the Winter Sage Caramel in my almond milk cappuccino. It is SO good. My only complaint is that their curbside service misses some details at times, including the “half sweet” option, so it was definitely too sweet for my personal tastes.

Horchata Cappuccino, real pumpkin spice latte (with horchata)

If Horchata is on the menu, I’m there. This place has a little bit of everything - part coffee shop, part music venue, part art gallery. I am partial to funky, local art and coffee shops that showcase it, so well done SoZo! A cool vibe, and some great art. I’d totally organize a concert here if Covid weren’t a thing. We came specifically to try the Horchata Cappuccino.

This is definitely more of a casual coffee type of place - If it weren’t for Covid, I’d probably bring my laptop here, get a drip coffee and spend a day working. It wasn’t the greatest cappuccino I’ve ever had - the balance of espresso to horchata was off, making this more of a latte than a cappuccino. Not sure the barista totally knew the difference. BUT I do appreciate the menu addition of horchata and it was a tasty drink. A little too sweet for me, but tasty.

The Real Pumpkin Spice Latte situation is GREAT. My brother’s latte, while sweet from aforementioned horchata, was so delightfully pumpkin-y and not in that gross, fake pumpkin spice kind of way. But in the freshly baked pumpkin bread kind of way. I’d come back to try another beverage with real pumpkin in it.

Sweetz Cold Brew Coffee

Nitro Cold Brew with Almond Milk, Almond Milk Cappuccino

This is a cold brew mecca. They do cold brew, nitro cold brew, and a million variations - their list of flavors that you can add to your brew is extensive, and they even offer a cold foam topper. It’s a really creative concept, and a great stop for an iced beverage.

I also sampled their cappuccino - I’d stick to their cold brew, however. The balance of milk to espresso was off, so if you’re looking for an authentic espresso beverage, I’d probably look elsewhere. But their cold brew is fantastic!! My brother had the regular cold brew while I tried the nitro - both were excellent. My sister in law tried the Chai with Butterbeer flavor - she absolutely loved it.

*They also feature TONS of local art, most of which is for sale. Beautiful, Arizona-themed pieces, coffee-themed pieces, all of it excellent. I am a sucker for coffee + art and love the support of local artists!

This is a flower shop/coffee shop hybrid, and I am here for it. The flower arrangements are STUNNING - snagged this gorgeous fall bouquet for $10 - and the variety of options and price points are great. The coffee is also excellent.

They have an extensive tea menu, in addition. The cappuccino was well made, well balanced, and came with the cutest little stopper/sticker (#CoffeeTime). My brother tried the Spicy Chai and loved it - we both want to try their special blend Jasmine Tea Latte on a future trip. I’d totally come back here for a quick capp close to home, and definitely if I was looking for a seasonal bouquet to brighten up my home.

(On my 2nd visit, I tried the nitro cold brew — skip it. Stick to the espresso and tea beverages here!)

Cartel Coffee Lab

810 S Ash Ave

Almond Milk Cappuccino

Cartel has been a coffee staple in the valley for a long time - the coffee is always consistently excellent. They roast their own delicious beans, and the quality is top notch. I have been coming to Cartel for over 10 years, since they roasted beans right in the back of their tiny outpost on Ash (Can you bring back your horchata latte though? Still the best I’ve ever had and I miss it 💛) and it is still one of my favorites.

Straightforward, great coffee. An excellent almond milk cappuccino. They have other locations, like Old Town Scottsdale (which is also great!) but this is the original in Tempe, close to the University. Always busy, and always good. They have a cool warehouse vibe and let you “in” on their roasting process.

The Bees Knees, Ginger Twist

A great Tempe spot right by campus! They have a charming outdoor area, and inside the shop you can watch their roasters working their magic - there’s a little something for everyone at Infusion.

Infusion 2.jpg

When I visited the shop, the barista admitted that he was overwhelmed and slightly unfamiliar with the drinks we ordered (which were on their signature menu…) so our order did take an unusually long amount of time. However, the drinks were delicious and at least he told us! We enjoyed the adorable (pictured) decor outside while we waited.

Of the two drinks we tried, I preferred the Ginger Twist - sparkling cold brew with lemon, ginger and vanilla. What’s not to like? Perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and the ginger kick matched the espresso just right. It was wonderful! I did also enjoy the Bees Knees, however it was a little sweet for my taste. Good news is, my brother preferred the Bees Knees so everyone was happy :)

Definitely planning to come back and try one of their roasts, as well as the Orange You Glad…(espresso, OJ, honey and an orange slice)

Cardamom Rose Latte, Lavender Honey Latte

This coffee shop is so cute - small, well decorated, bright. Reminds me Maman in New York City, in fact. Baristas are super super nice, and know their stuff. I couldn’t WAIT to try the Cardamom Rose latte - I am obsessed with cardamom coffee, and after drinking this I want 1000 of these bad boys. It’s very rose forward, but balances perfectly with the bitterness of the espresso and the bite of the cardamom - So. Good. And not too sweet. They even offer a macadamia milk option, which earns them bonus points in my book.

My brother had the Lavender Honey latte, and it was equally as delicious. Super flavorful - you get the delightful desert honey flavor at first sip, and a delicate lavender finish. It’s not overpowering, and was a just a bit sweet but not too much so. Berdena’s is a slam dunk, and I’ll be coming back for more Cardamom Rose ASAP.

The coffee is just excellent. Perfectly pulled espresso, and the house made almond mylk is worth the drive - just delicious. They are SO nice here, and very knowledgeable about their coffee, offering a straightforward menu of coffee beverages. I’d like to come back and try their Toddy Cold Brew. But whatever I get, it will definitely be with their house made mylk. They also offer standard, barista blend almond milk, but the house made is the way to go.

The space is bright and airy, with tons of plants - I’m a sucker for this type of aesthetic. I would totally come and work from this space if it weren’t CovidTimes. They also serve Conchas, a Mexican sweet bread, with rotating flavors!

This spot is absolutely lovely inside. Beautiful flowers (IG: _heavynettle_), beautiful art, and beautiful pastries (IG: @amanda.made.it). This is definitely somewhere that I would come hang out and work (in a non-pandemic world). On my first visit, I strayed from my usual coffee order here and tried a chai - a departure for me - and it was DELISH. On my second visit, I tried an almond milk cappuccino. It was tasty and well made. My brother tried the pumpkin bread and was happy to report that it was also delicious! He also had an Arnold Palmer made with their prickly pear tea.

The baristas were friendly, knowledgeable and speedy. I will for sure return to echo. This coffee shop just radiates joy!

Four Till Four Coffee

Lavender Blueberry Matcha Latte, Rosemary Maple Latte

This tiny little coffee spot in Scottsdale is adorable - they have vintage machines, car culture, and their own coffee (which they sell in the cutest little cans). They roast it in-house in a vintage machine, and sell coffee subscriptions too! The vintage vibe is strong here, and it is truly charming. Lots of plants in the store as well, and a lovely outdoor patio.

I absolutely chugged this Lavender Blueberry Matcha Latte - the flavor was very subtle, not overpowering, and not too sweet. My brother got the Rosemary Maple Latte (iced) and I actually think I liked that even better. I love herby flavors with my coffee, and this was delightful. Again, a subtle flavor, but just enough. My brother also had a chia pudding parfait, which he really really enjoyed. I definitely want to come back and try their cappuccinos, as I’m sure they will be stellar.

Regroup Coffee + Bicycles

Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Almond Milk Cappuccino, Soda Americano

I love a good coffee in a bike shop situation. One of my favorite coffee spots in St Pete, FL is in a bike shop. So, I had high hopes for Regroup, located in a beautiful location in Scottsdale. Unfortunately, the guy working the shop said that the barista left at noon on Mondays and Tuesdays, and we were there at 2 pm so it is hard to tell whether or not we had a fair experience of their coffee offerings as he was clearly not the one who normally makes their coffee.

The inside of the shop is gorgeous - lots of plants, clean and pretty. The coffee was mediocre. My cappuccino was okay, not super well-crafted. My brother ordered the Soda Americano - a combo of Mexican coke, espresso and vanilla syrup - which we were both excited to try. Not sure what happened here, but it didn’t taste right. It was very vegetal, almost earthy tasting, perhaps the espresso wasn’t pulled properly.

I’d be curious to try this shop again, when the barista is actually in - however, it will not be my first stop when considering which coffee shop to revisit first. A miss for me

★★.5

I would have given it three stars had they been enforcing their mask policy, but both the guy working as well as a number of their customers were mask-less. He did put his mask on to make our coffee, but was not wearing it while helping a customer with a bike as we entered the shop.

Black Sesame Oat Milk Cappuccino

Located inside of Cider Corps in Mesa, Pair Cupworks is a fantastic coffee find. You can find their beans all around the valley, namely at Reap and Sow, and their coffee is just wonderful. The barista was friendly, speedy, knowledgable and made excellent drinks.

I tried one of their latte specials, but asked the barista to make it cappuccino style with a little bit less milk (and a little bit less sweet). Thus, the Black Sesame Cappuccino was born. And it was delightful. It wasn’t SUPER sesame forward - probably due to the request for less-sweet - but the coffee itself was super smooth, perfectly pulled and well-balanced with the oat milk. The sesame was subtle and delicious.

I would not hesitate to come back and try their other offerings, and would certainly come back just for a simple, well-made cappuccino.

This is an easy one. Go to Mythical coffee. It is just straight up excellent. All of their bevs are delicious, and their seasonal menu is creative and fun. I mean, come on, they have a neon unicorn! They also sell these cute little can glasses with the Loch Ness Monster on them - I use mine every day.

The first thing I tried was their coffee and soda - they let you pick what type of soda you want - and I chose lemon Spindrift. Their espresso is perfectly pulled, and this was refreshing and tasty. My second time, I tried the Smoked Maple Nitro Cold Brew and it was outstanding. They paired it with oat milk, so it was a little bit creamy, not too sweet and very flavorful. My brother tried one of their seasonal shrubs, an apple cider vinegar sparkling drink, that was also delicious. On my third visit, I tried their Sparkling Strawberry Lavender Lemonade with Espresso - WOW. What a wonderful espresso and soda combo. Sounds a little weird, but it was weirdly wonderful.

The coffee (which they roast themselves and sell to other coffee shops all over the valley, such as Berdena’s & Reap and Sow) is consistently excellent, the baristas are knowledgable and their menu is very interesting. I’ll keep coming back again and again.

WINTER MENU UPDATE - holy cow. Eggnog latte (or Eggnog Chai - DO IT) is amazing. Gingerbread Latte is AMAZING. Mulled Wine Latte is outstanding. AND the Cranberry Oranges Espresso + Soda is utterly fantastic. If nothing else, come for the candied cranberries that come atop your delightful beverages!!!!

Iced Dirty Chai with Almond Milk

Bergie’s is a cute spot in Gilbert, with lots of outdoor seating, and a rustic, farmhouse aesthetic. They have a zillion different flavor options for your drinks, including Toasted Marshmallow, Mayan Mocha, etc if that is your thing - I strayed from my normal straightforward coffee order to try an Iced Dirty Chai with almond milk.

My chai was delicious. Nothing to write home about, but a solid drink and very tasty. This is probably not the place from which I would order a cappuccino - BUT, they roast and source their own beans, so I’d totally come back for a drip coffee and give that a taste. In fact, I’ll totally come back to try their Maui Red, Farmhouse Blend, and the Mexican Chiapas - and take some beans home with me, too!

(Rating pending, as I’d like to try their drip)

The Coffee Shop @ Agritopia

3000 E Ray Rd
Gilbert, AZ 85296

Drip Coffee (Ordered an Almond Milk Cappuccino)

I almost didn’t even include this one, because our experience was so terrible. First of all, they were not enforcing the mask mandate in Arizona. People were freely entering the shop without masks, not respecting the 6-feet social distancing expectation, and it took an actual eternity for us to get service. Not a good start.

The woman working the register kept messing up our order, repeating back to us the incorrect drinks. My sister in law ordered an almond milk chai, my brother a cold brew with almond milk, and I ordered an almond milk cappuccino - these were not complicated drinks. After an extremely long wait, and after an extremely long transaction where she had to run my credit card 4 times, then and only then did they mention that their espresso machine wasn’t working and so they could not make my drink. They substituted it with a drip coffee. The coffee was absolutely terrible. Undrinkable, actually. It was lukewarm, watery, had no flavor whatsoever. It was awful.

Skip it. If you’re in the area and want to see a beautiful mural (left), that is worth checking out - as are the beautiful grounds. But if you’re looking for coffee, I’d visit one of the other shops on this list.

The girl working the register had her mask down, exposing her nose. They lost a star for this, and their general Covid safety (or lack thereof).

Multiple Locations

Black Rock Coffee

Nitro Cold Brew with Almond Milk

Love their slogan: Fuel Your Story!! I can get down with that. This is a great drive-up coffee stop with multiple locations across the valley - I visited the Chandler location near Ocotillo - and it was great. Fast, efficient, and absolutely delicious. They were super friendly, and the coffee is excellent.

They have a bunch of flavored coffee options, smoothies, etc. Not sure if I would order a cappuccino from Black Rock, but their cold brew was great and I’d go for another Black Rock run if I wanted a quick pick me up.

They also roast and sell their own beans, so I’d love to try their drip!

Original Shaker

There are a bunch of Press Coffees around the valley - 9 to be exact!! It is super modern inside, with some unique design details. The coffee offerings are both straightforward and a little funky - their shakers, specifically. They roast their own beans, so the quality of the coffee is excellent. I had the Original Shaker - cold brew, organic agave and almond milk creamer. It was delightful! A little bit sweet, but not too much. It was just what we needed on a hot day.

I’d totally come back and try their cappuccinos, as well as their drip coffees. We tried the Muse Apartments location in Downtown Phoenix.
